Venus and Serena Williams are likely two of the first faces you picture when you hear the words “professional tennis.” These elite athletes have been dominating the sport for more than two decades and have inspired legions of fans in the meantime. However, don’t forget that these talented sisters have a life off the court, too.
Venus Williams is credited with beginning a new era in professional women’s tennis with her incredible skill and dedication. Yes, she has seven Grand Slam singles titles, 14 doubles titles, and four Olympic gold medals on her list of accolades. But she’s also just a regular person hanging out at home watching movies and enjoying life.
Venus Williams has a pretty standard bedtime routine
Before going to sleep at night, Venus takes off her makeup, changes into pajamas, and brushes her teeth just like so many other people do. But she does kick things up a notch in the fun department by not performing the whole ritual in silence.
“While I’m doing my skin routine, I play music—it’s like my closing song of the day,” Venus said during an interview with Domino.
She said she doesn’t stick to one genre of music, either. “It’s always changing,” she said. “I’ve been listening to a lot of ’70s songs by Minnie Riperton. She sings that song ‘Loving You’ — I heard it at the end of the movie Us, and I was like, ‘I love this song!’ A closing song helps me end the day, and then I have different morning songs — I keep a speaker next to my bed.”
She also has one weird bedtime ritual
Listening to music is one thing, but there’s something else Venus does before turning in for the evening that most people probably don’t know.
“I like to watch movies before bedtime if I can,” Venus explained during the interview. “I try to make time for them, especially when I’m on the road, to clear my mind for my next match.”
As for types, she sticks with the same kind of genre and never picks something that will keep her up past her bedtime. “I love comedies, particularly ones from the ’80s and ’90s,” Venus said during the interview. “I recently watched Singles — there are all these alternative rock bands in it, and it stars Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon. I also liked Baby Boom with Diane Keaton. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re bad, but they’re always relaxing. It’s never like, ‘Oh, my God, are they going to find this person’s killer?’ right before you go to bed.”
Venus’s bedroom is her sanctuary
At bedtime, Venus has a few very understandable demands, like good quality pajama sets and a down pillow she takes with her on the road. She also wants her bedroom space to feel like a sanctuary.
“When I walk into my bedroom, I always want to feel comforted and calm. I just moved, so I haven’t had a chance to really decorate, but that’s the goal,” she told Domino. “My room has been white forever, so I’m going to keep it that way, but I like adding in some accent colors, such as turquoise or black. I once had a black velvet bed—it was amazing.”
Just like Cinderella, Venus never stays up past midnight. “Lights-out between 11:30 p.m. and midnight!” she said.
