Here’s the most intriguing thing about Joe Judge’s initial Giants coaching staff — and why he could have succ - NJ.com

Joe Judge’s initial Giants coaching staff is almost complete.

He has hired all of his primary position coaches, with Sean Spencer (defensive line) being the latest. Some lower-profile hires could still be coming. But the staff is essentially set.

And we can already notice one big takeaway from this staff — which could help Judge succeed quickly in 2020, as a 38-year-old rookie head coach.

Judge has four former head coaches on his staff, guys who can offer guidance for big-picture things like clock management decisions and handling egos in the locker room. Judge hasn’t ever been required to navigate those sometimes-rocky waters.

Of the four former head coaches on Judge’s staff, only offensive coordinator Jason Garrett (formerly of the Cowboys) has had much success. So that’s worth noting.

But in addition to Garrett, Freddie Kitchens (tight ends), Bret Bielema (outside linebackers), and Derek Dooley (role to be determined) have also occupied the head coach’s seat. All three men surely learned lessons from their head coaching failures — and they can perhaps pass those pointers along to Judge, though they need to be careful about overstepping.

Kitchens has just one season of head coaching experience, as he went 6-10 last season with the Browns. Bielema and Dooley have never been NFL head coaches.

But Bielema was Wisconsin’s head coach from 2006-12 and Arkansas’ big whistle from 2013-17. He went 68-24 at Wisconsin and 29-34 at Arkansas. Dooley went 17-20 at Louisiana Tech from 2007-09 and 15-21 at Tennessee from 2010-12.

The accomplishments of Kitchens, Bielema, and Dooley all obviously pale in comparison to what Garrett did with the Cowboys — 85-67 record in nine-plus seasons, with three playoff appearances in the past six seasons. Garrett figures to be a valuable advisor for Judge.

But Judge would also be wise to take tips from those other former head coaches on his staff, as he embarks on this challenging job for the first time.
