The Lions, Giants and Dolphins won’t be able to save Jason Garrett in January. That is the level of team the Cowboys have shown they are capable of beating this season, and according to an NFL Network report the only thing that will keep Garrett as Cowboys coach is a deep playoff run.
“It does appear to be heading to a divorce,” reporter Ian Rapoport said on Sunday. “The only way from what I understand Jason Garrett could save [his job] is make the playoffs, go deep into the playoffs, most likely to the NFC title game.”
The 6-7 Cowboys, who have yet to beat a team above .500 this season, remain atop the NFC East with the Eagles a half-game behind and playing the Giants on Monday night.
But it has been far from a first-place atmosphere in Dallas. Owner Jerry Jones has been hinting at Garrett’s job security since a Week 12 loss to the Patriots that has sparked a current three-game losing streak. Jones unraveled on Friday following a loss to the Bears, cursing the hosts out on Friday in his weekly radio spot on 105.3 FM in Dallas.
The tension has now been a story for weeks, and former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson does not see it ending well for Garrett.
“I don’t think so,” Johnson said on the Fox pregame show. “I think even if they win the division and even if they’re in the playoffs — I don’t see them winning a playoff game — and I think the negativity in Dallas and around the Cowboys right now, it would be miserable if he continued to be the head coach.
“Nobody would be happy if he continued to be the head coach a year from now.”
The NFC East could come down to a Week 16 Cowboys-Eagles matchup in Philadelphia. The winner will likely be home underdogs in the playoffs with the 10-3 Seahawks currently occupying the first wild-card spot.
