Bernie Sanders is proving that 'Latinx' is not a thing with Latino voters - Washington Examiner

Liberals are always demanding silly changes to the English language and beating any critics of those changes into submission by accusing them of racism, sexism, or some other form of bigotry.

It's a concept I cover at great length in my new book Privileged Victims: How America's Culture Fascists Hijacked the Country and Elevated Its Worst People (out Feb. 25).

But their latest fetish with semantics goes too far, even for Bernie Sanders.

A new Huffington Post profile on the Sanders campaign’s approach to Latino voters in Iowa said it emphasizes “cultural competency,” rather than the dumb language dictums that come from elite (read: white) liberals.

“Official campaign materials refer to ‘Latinos,’ rather than the gender-neutral term ‘Latinx’ favored by young progressives, because ‘Latino’ is used more broadly,” the report said, citing senior campaign official Chuck Rocha.

To say that Latino is “used more broadly” doesn’t quite do this issue justice.

The liberal political consulting firm ThinkNow Research conducted a nationwide survey of more than 500 Latinos in the United States, asking respondents what term they felt described them most accurately. It included terms such as “Hispanic,” “Latino/Latina,” and “Latino.”

Nearly 70% chose either Latino/Latina or Hispanic.

A much smaller number, 6%, said they’d rather just go plainly by “American.”

For "Latinx," it was 2%.

“Despite its usage by academics and cultural influencers, 98% of Latinos prefer other terms to describe their ethnicity,” wrote the survey’s author, Mario Carrasco. “Only 2% of our respondents said the label accurately describes them, making it the least popular ethnic label among Latinos.”

“Academics and cultural influencers” should, again, be understood as meaning "white liberals." Sanders obviously falls into that category, but he’s going for the Latino vote by talking with those voters the way they actually talk (a novel concept, for sure). And it’s working well for him.

CNN reported in December that “Hispanics may prove a kind of secret weapon for Sanders,” citing his lead among that group in polls for Nevada, California, Texas, and Florida.

If even he knows that “Latinx” is a joke not used by the people to which it’s being applied, everyone else might go ahead and catch on that it’s just one more way liberals are busying themselves by telling us how to talk.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
